Mustang Talk>Loud exhaust = fast???(NO!)
KidFunkadelic 03:05 AM 01-08-2004
I have an 02 GT. The other day some kid (I'm 38) in a frontend lowered window tinted Mitsubishi pulls up next to me gunning his engine. I had passed by him running open stock H-pipe. He had one of those large aftermarket mufflers ( I call them "butthole mufflers" cause they sound like a fart.)

Ever since I got my car, every manner of junk with a "butthole muffler"; s-10's, escorts, whatever; will pull up to my car and try to race me.

Does this happen to you? Did these people watch The Fast and the Ridiculous and think "hey, if I get a 'butthole muffler' my car will go as fast as that car on t.v."

Do they just not have any experience to know what fast is? Or are they just :-) that stupid?

Ah yes, the "butthole muffler". The common nomenclature we use around here is "fart can", but we know exactly what you mean.
Apparently, the Ford Mustang has become the racing benchmark to beat. Enjoy the jealousy your car attracts. Unfortunately, I drive a Ford Explorer so no one ever revs on me. I just smash down on the gas pedal and let my torque converter make them look stupid.

"Fart can" "butthole muffler" whatever you call them, to me they still sound like junk. I don't care if it is brand new and "supposed to sound like that". Sounds like a 1983 Chevy Chevette with a rusty muffler dangling by a piece of wire. Is that what it's "supposed" to sound like? I have no problem with imports, a fast car is a fast car no matter how you go about it. A 15sec Civic drawing the attention of every cop within 3 blocks sitting beside me at a red lignt is not a fast car. And then guess who the cop wants to follow, the guy who can't afford a muffler that functions properly, or the menace to society who dares to drive a race car in their city. This is the situation I encounterted one Saturday night. I do not drink and drive but the cop spotted a beer bottle cap I had thrown in the hatch while working on it one night. All of a sudden now I'm drunk too now so three more cops and a Black Lab show up. He had already wanted to search my car and I told him no but the beer cap gave him probable cause so the drug dog got to run his dirty ass all around my car. Of course this stupid dog that was poorly trained for a drug dog(I breed Weimaraners, I know an obediant dog)hit on everything in my car. To the cops dismay nothing was found despite their persistence. This entire situation didn't even make me that mad until the cop told me he would never have paid attention to me and pulled me over if I would not have reved up my motor at the light. He got behind me and saw my NOS sticker and "knew I was a street racer". Remembering what mom said about if you can't say anything nice, so my rant about fart cans and cops is over.....................There is a picture that hangs in my office and I wish I could post it. It says "I see stupid people.......they are all around me............they don't even know they are stupid".

butthole muffler? that is the dumbest thing ive heard in a while, but you cant blame these guys for puttin aftermarket mufflers on their civics and eclipses, b/c if they put a REAL exhaust system on their car (flowmaster, borla gibson) theyd get made fun of either way. so the moral of this story is owning a japanese car is a lose lose situation.

"owning a japanese car is a lose lose situation."

Only if you make it that way.

I think that is such a wrong statement.

I would take my GTR over any other car that I have ever owned. But, that is not say, I would take it over my Stang when I got done with it. There are so many variables.

Not really, a custom engine Civic can make low 14's through the factory muffler. A 99+ Mustang still makes high 13's with straight pipes. The point is that a loud muffler is not necessary in order to get the car to perform better. If the opposite were true, my 1980 Chevy Chevette should of been the fastest car on earth when the muffler broke off.

Look, if your embarrassed because you know something that the ricer guys do not, and it works....Screw them if they laugh, that just shows how ignorant they are.

Be an individual, do not be a follower. I read tech info from both sides. I have learned from both sides. Am I on the fence post, don't know, don't care. I do have knowledge. And I use it.

Do not be afraid to use the knowledge you have learned. It makes you a better enthusiast.

I will tell you this.

The GTR guys here laugh at me all the time. I do stuff that I have learned being around Fords all my life. Do I stop thinking the way I do, fuck no. Its not my fault they are ignorant about what I do.

Point and laugh all they want. I know what works. So, basically be yourself.

I could not have said it better. One of the reasons I went with a Turbo Buick is because Not everyone owns an 11 sec BUICK. Also they stand out of the usuall mix of mustangs and camaros. alot of buick people told me that if I want to run 11's I had to get a posi and port my heads run race gas blah blah blah..... If I would of followed them I would be stuck in the 12's to low 13's. Well back to the subject of loud= HP. Have you ever herd a Turbo buick go down the track??? You don't, you might hear the turbo but there is no engine noise to be herd. (Usually)

Some Japanese cars are great, I have loved the Supra since the late 80s, and I saw a brand new NSX crossing Burbon St. a few weeks ago that made my knees weak. My TSI Conquest I used to have was a geat car, super quick to be a 4banger. A Japanese car is no lose lose situation. It's just that they are not all fast nor were they intended to be.

A GN is no joke, these things are way faster than they look or sound. My buddy from high school had one that was all stock that kept up with my 5.7 Iroc Camaro. I have even been smoked by one at a Mustang/Grand National shootout. Nice car.

Thats thing that that bugs me,the retard (for lack of a better word) that has a civic with a fart muffler and a monster tach on his dash that actually thinks his car is fast and brags about it.Those types just annoy me to death and theres is alot of them around.Guys who own truly fast cars (import or domestic) dont have to brag about it they just kick ass when race time comes.

Yea they haull. Nice build up on your car. It must be sweet to have a car like that and be able to curise Burbon street :-) :-) . Last year was the first year for my GN. This summer I plan to be running in the 11.00-11.20 range. I am going to attempt to do this for under 3k and keep the car full weight and full street car... (A/C curise, Nice sterio.etc)

P.S, What was done to the IROC for the GN to keep up with it??
