Engine>most power with least amount of noise
fuzzynaval 02:14 AM 10-20-2001
I hate the lack of power with this car...but I don't want to increase the noise level all that much. Kind of why I ditched the Honda Civic....so what are some mods I can do to get me to go up a hill without problems...yet not make my car too loud?

TURBO! they actually quiet down the exhaust :-)
As for cheaper options, here's what i can think of off the top of my head.

Header
Pullies
Timing
Lightened flywheel (maybe install a clutch at the same time?)
*cams (awesome power w/ no extra sound)
Get a custom exhaust made with the largest resonator and muffler you can fit.
any type of internal motor work

I'd recommend a CAI also... helps a ton, and the sound is like no other... it sounds great! and it's actually very quiet, until you really get on it... then it just lights up! :-)

OK, let's add it up.....

$ 425 Header
175 Pulleys
425 Flywheel
550 Cams
-------
$1,575 Total

Feeling the boost...... PRICELESS! :-)

That puts you in DET country. Of course the DET is an all at once expense while the NA parts can easily be done over time. All of this assumes you do the install yourself in both cases. If you add up having someone install all this stuff for you, you're probably into DET country for installation costs as well.

That said, I agree with all those items and would add the ECU to that as well.

The CAI adds a ton of noise - more than the exhaust!

Before I went turbo, I had a flywheel, pulleys, and header. I wanted to add ECU and cams. :-) So, I totally agree with you Justin (except the CAI). Nice choices for NA .

Yes, I would have to agree that the turbo would be the way to go. Best bang for the buck without a doubt.
And it's quiet also....

Hello,
You should be able to get the 2-pulley set from Courtesy Nissan for like $159.00-$169.00..... 1-800-527-1909. I don't know who to deal with now that Vince is gone though.

are those as good as Unorthodox Racing Pulleys?

Sorry, those are the Unorthodox Pulleys....

I always assumed that a header ads a lot of noise? But again I am assuming so I am not to sure.

Yeah, as far as the CAI, I wasn't too clear. It does add a lot of noise, mostly at WOT though... As far as crusing around town it's pretty quiet, it isn't until you put a lot of load on the motor that it's starts to get noisy. I was just trying suggest it as a possible alternative as it helps quite a bit with power, and would compliment the other mods nicely, just at teh expense of noise. Sorry.

As for the header, i just noticed it changed the tone of the intake (made it sound not quiet as smooth, if that makes sense?), i dont really remember it making it any louder though. And the cars i rode in with cams i havn't really sounded any louder than my car, but it may have just been the car. I know if sounds different up top.. but i didn't think it was any louder, but it may have been their car too. I unfortunately don't have cams yet :-) Should be getting a cam out of a 10:1 Primera motor any time now though. :-) I've heard that that cam is slightly more aggressive than the 91 cam even, but i've never seen a dyno graph to prove so, any thoughts/opinions?

When I added a header to my P10 I could not notice any additional noise.

The header by itself will not increase the noise level ,as for the CAI intake, you will only get that throaty bark when stepping down on the gas.
If you change the exhaust silencers or muffler then you may get a significant increase in noise levels.

Yes, I agree that a header by itself doesn't increase the loudness of the car.

but isn't getting headers without an exhaust kind of pointless? You are opening up air flow in the front...but still restrictive back at the exhaust?
I had a friend do that with his car...and it came loose at the flange from the resonance.

Also...getting a turbo without opening up airflow in the back end...isn't that gonna restrict the turbo's perfomance?

No, and yes.
On my car the header helped a lot, and i don't have an exhaust. I think a full system (I/H/E) would free up the most hp, but the header still helps a lot without an exhaust.
As for with the turbo, yes, a small exhuast increases backpressure quite a bit. A bigger exhuast frees up a lot of horsepower on a car with either a turbo or a supercharger.
