I am trying to locate the evap cannister on my kids 2000 grand am. it is giving me a small leak code and i am trying to fix this myself, I just installed a LIM and I am ow dealing with two codes one is for the throttle position sensor and the other is this small leak, the gas cap was loose. how long does it take for a code to leave the system??..thanks [Reply]
Its possible the evap canister, its located in the rear portion of the car. Right next to the fuel filter, its a large square box.
Id check all the hose clamps in that area. They tend to loosen up over time and get small leaks. Thier are several right in that area.
If the leak is fixed the code should disapear very soon.
2000 grand am: just replaced lim and now dealing with CEL stuff. one code pertained to throttle pos sens. replaced part, code is gone. 0442 remains. i have replaced the gas cap and purge solenoid. code cleared and vehicle was driven several days, before CEL lit and gives 0442 code again! i sprayed all the hose ends/couplings with carb cleaner thinking this would alter the idle speed and therefore show the leak. no luck. is there the possibility that i have faulty vent solenoid?? [Reply]
the hoses and lines appear to be okay nothing loose or rotten and the cann looks okay. as i stated i sprayed carb cleaner on all the hose connections and all over the intake with no change in idle. so i dont think there is a vacumm leak there. wouldnt the egr have its own code? Is there a vacumm line for the a/c under the battery?? right now its dark and the driveway is darn cold. i will get back to this tommorrw. hope your here to help! also what about these fuses? are these located under the hood or inside the car? thanks for the help [Reply]
i didnt have any ether so i figured the carb cleaner is pretty combustible and thus would affect the idle if a vacumm leak was present. too old school? anyway nice hood on your poncho [Reply]
well..........took off the cannister vent solenoid it was not dirty or clogged and when i aplied 12v to the terminals it seemed to function ok...plunger goes in and out. i am going to let it warm up and then check plug for 12 volts it, it seems it will only have voltage when pcm calls for cannister purge. i put key in on position but engine was cold, and did not get any reaction from vent solenoid by unplugging or plugging in connector. [Reply]
I believe that the 12Vdc will be present all the time and when the pcm call for the canister to vent, it will enable the ground which will cause the solenoid to engage to vent the canister. [Reply]
i see a lot of corrosion on the filler pipe, previous owner must have driven this car quite awhile with the lim leaking anti freeze, the exhaust clamps we corroded in half from the coolant running down the bottom of the car. to answer a previous question, the CEL was on when I bought the car for my duaghter. I hope that the auto supply store carries this part (filler pipe) [Reply]
the pipe was bad. gm parts guy tells me this is very common. been diving the car daily with out cel popping......fingers are crossed. now if i can figure out why her blinkers are acting up i would really be "the man" lol. thanks for all the advice gentlemen. [Reply]
